This is the latest installment of Jamie's blog followers digest,
and this one tells the tale of a young lad who liked the sound of falconry and decided to give it a go but he was so very wrong and died of fright shortly afterwards.....
Like thats ever gonna happen..
This is the real story:
He had an amazing time with different bits of chick - and ways of getting birds to grab it. After he had done the first 4 preformances he had a break but then it was straight back to bird handling. After the last 6 flights it was off home again or should I say off to ZZZZzzzzz again as he slept all the way home in the car.
The owls/hawks: Nadi the Bengal eagle owl, Tundra the Snowy owl, Elsa & Dale the two Harris hawks, Barnie the American Barn owl, Sepu the mini version of Nadi, Clovis the "Im sorry I forgot your breed!" owl and last but definitely not least, Indi the New Zealand Morepork. With Indi you had to throw the dead day old chicks in the air for him to catch, with the other owls landing on the glove in a flying mass of feathers, claws, beak and chick.Indi was definitely my favourite
Was easily the best experience in my life. Thanks for the memories nanna!!!!!!

Wow!! Wow!! and double Wow!! That looks like and awesome experience and you did so well not to get spooked by all the flapping wings and feathers. Well done you! I am green with envy.

A couple of points... Firstly, how on earth are we going to remove the grin from Jamies face, socondly, it's a pity that he can't have a Morepork... They do have distinct advantages, for instance they are marvelous for keeping elephants out of the back garden... apart from Aukland zoo how many elephants have you seen in New Zealand? And how on earth do we top that the next time he comes over to england

Good job I realised you were tricking me when you made out you were scared! You never so much as blinked an eyelid as those magnificent birds flew to your glove... and the Bengal eagle owl was a bit of a whopper! Thank you for giving me an excuse for flying the owls too. I think I enjoyed it as much as you did.... or perhaps not quite as much, eh? Love, Nanna

I have recently acquired a book called "Training Birds of Prey" by Jemima Parry-Jones (director of the National Birds of Prey Centre in Newent, Gloucestershire. It has everything the falconer needs to know about training the five family groups: hawks, falcons, eagles, buzzards and owls. It also tries to put you off from having a bird if you do not have the right conditions and commitment to keep them properly. Would you like me to keep it for you? Nanna
