Wonderful Welsh Weekend

hello world! Bore da! That's how you say "Good morning" in Welsh!! Well that's your language lesson for today!

This post is about the wonderful Welsh weekend I had in the middle of July, hence the name of this post. We left Somerset and drove over the Severn bridge and into Wales, then kept going until we got to Big Pit. In the photo is the pit head wheel that makes the cages go up and down the 90 meters to the pit bottom. The miners used to travel up and down in the cages but nowadays it's just for tourists like us to have a look at Wales's old history. In the old days, boys as young as 8 were working in the pit, and if you think about what the coal dust does to people's lungs it's quite scary. Ponies lived down the mine from when they were 4 years old until they died & they never even saw a 10 cent-sized piece of sunlight again.

After Big Pit we kept driving to Carmarthenshire to see my mum's friend Katrina that she hadn't seen for 21 years. Last time they saw each other they were only 18 and loads has changed for them since then, but one thing stuck. . . KNITTING!! Katrina, Ewen and their children took us to the Botanical gardens of Wales and also to Kidwelly Castle where we got to see some re-enactments from the 14th century. That's even older than my mum and great grandad put together!!! The castle in the photo is Kidwelly Castle.

After we left Katrina's we went to visit another old friend of my mum's called Jill. Jill used to be my mum's teacher at secondary school and they became friends after my mum finished school. Jill took us to a beach at Llantwit Major where we found loads of fossils only a few steps from the car park. Only half a meter from the car park we found the first fossil!
